Camp Kesem

Picture
Camp Kesem ("Camp Magic" in Hebrew) began in Spring 2000 as a Hillel social action project initiated by Jewish students at Stanford.  Students and staff assessed the needs of children in Northern California and found that children who have a parent with cancer have unique needs and are under-served.  Camp Kesem was founded to help fill those needs.
Camp Kesem provides a safe, supportive, and exciting overnight camp experience for children who have a parent who is currently in treatment for cancer, is in remission from cancer, or who has died from cancer.  Campers have the unique opportunity to build friendships and gain strength from peers facing similar experiences.
Camp Kesem makes a huge impact on the lives of children, but it also prepares and empowers a generation of student leaders by allowing responsible college-age individuals to make a meaningful difference.  Student leaders involved with Camp Kesem gain invaluable experience in project management, community relations, human resources, accounting, and fundraising.  Also, they gain an understanding of the non-profit world - and how they can use these skills to make a difference after college.
Between 2001 and 2009, Camp Kesem grew from a single Stanford student-run camp hosting 37 campers to a national movement serving over 1000 campers at 22 camps.
